We will be conducting the show in the outdoor arena this year. The reasons are many… the arena is the same size as the oval, the show office is much larger, the concession stands are right there, Show Sponsors can set up EZ-Up tents around the show arena to watch the show in comfort, it’s cooler for exhibitors and the ring officials, less glare from the stark white walls of the indoor arena and there’s no need to walk up and down a long flight of steps to watch the classes. There is still shaded seating and a warm up arena. Many other shows use the outdoor arena so we thought that we’d give it a try too.

We’re looking for Class and Show Sponsors. To see our Show Sponsor packages, click here. If you’re interested in supporting our show, please contact Dianna Whisenant (818-404-0757). A special thank you to those that have already signed up such as California Riding Magazine, Horseman’s News and Peruvian Horse Quarterly Magazine.

Silent Auction
As this is the only show that Los Amigos sponsors each year, we are having a silent auction to help pay for show expenses.  For those of  you who are attending the show, or close to someone who is, we are asking for donated items for this auction.  We love horse related items.  But there are a host of other fun items that work too.  If you have items to bring, please take them to to Joy Redman (j1345r@fiestadev.com), Danell Adams (captDA45@aol.com) or to the office.  If you drop them off at the office, please leave a note as to who is donating and the value of the item.

Thanks to all of our members for your continued support!  Hope to see you at the show.

WHAT: 29th Annual Los Amigos Championship Show

WHO: YOU!!!

After much consideration and many discussions about the results of the 2009 Exhibitor Survey, the Los Amigos Board has changed a few things to make Los Amigos the best show possible. Here are just a few of the new things that we will have this year…

THREE DAY SHOW!
To have the time to include sufficient classes for both the Breeding and Performance divisions, we felt that it was best to go back to a 3-day show. Having three days allows us all to relax a little bit, enjoy the show and our aficion for the Peruvian Horse. With this, we are bringing back Saturday night classes and some fun to go along with that as well.

MONEY CLASSES!
Who doesn’t like winning money?!
Gelding Stakes: Not only do we have the Gelding Stakes class, which is a $500 guaranteed purse PLUS entries! This is typically a large class so the prize money should be substantial.
Member to Ride: We’ve also make the Los Amigos Member to Ride class a jackpot, in which $40 of the $50 entry fee goes into a pot. The winner of this Member to Ride class also wins the Tom & Beverly Voiss Perpetual Trophy that includes a beautiful medallion that the winner keeps.
Peruvian Reining Series: We have added four classes for the Peruvian Reining Series, a new set of classes that are performance oriented but stay with the traditions of the Peruvian Horse. All entry fees will be put into a jackpot and paid out as prize money. There are also end-of-year high point awards for those that exhibit in these classes at shows participating in the Series this year. Click here to download a complete set of guidelines.

LOWER SPONSORSHIP RATES!
We greatly appreciate your support of the Los Amigos Championship Show – we can’t put it on without sponsors! This year, we decided to offer discounted rates for multiple class sponsorships. Rates are:
Regular Classes: $35/each or 2 for $50
Championship Classes: $45/each or 2 for $75
We have also dropped the price of our Show Sponsor package to $300. This includes a banner in the arena, an end stall and two regular class sponsorships. That’s a $50 savings!
Please contact Dianna Whisenant (818/404-0757  ddwhiz@earthlink.net) to sponsor today!

SILENT AUCTION: EXPECT TO BE IMPRESSED!
We will be having the silent auction again this year at the show. This year, along with great jewelry, wine, books, tack, etc., we are offering breedings to FIVE incredible stallions:
JCG Gringo
MCD Cascabel
MCD Coronado+
MCD Rubinejo
RCh Ventarrones+
You need not be at the show to bid on these stallion services. We will be updating the Los Amigos Facebook page regularly with the current bids so that others around the country can bid as well.
If you are interested in donating something to the silent auction, please contact Danell Adams (949/436-2717 or captDA45@aol.com) or Joy Redman (562/301-0403 or j1345r@fiestadev.com).

MORE BOZAL CLASSES!
We know that bringing horses to a show is expensive so we are doing everything possible for you to get the most for your money. In the past, there were only 1-2 classes that bozal horses could enter. This year, we have the standard Gelding, Mare and Stallion Bozal classes but we have also added Bozal Pisos, which also qualifies for Best Bozal Horse of Show. There is also a class in the Peruvian Reining Series for bozal horses as well. Now you have Peruvian Reining Level One, Bozal, Bozal Pisos and the standard bozal classes!

EXPANDED GAIT DIVISION!
After studying the entries for the Gait classes, we decided that it was best to divide the classes not only by gender, but also by age, just as we do for the Breeding classes. First and second place winners from all six of these classes will be able to enter Best Gaited Horse of Show. Also, to stay in line with Peru, Best Gaited Horse of Show now recognizes a Champion and Reserve Champion. The Champion will also win the Angie Schmidt Perpetual Trophy, which is a gorgeous glass champagne bucket. The winner will take home an etched bottle of champagne.

SATURDAY NIGHT PARTY!
Come enjoy classes and exhibitions Saturday night. During the evening performance, Peruvian Horse Quarterly, Phenom Farms and Piloto’s Shadow Ranch are hosting a wine and cheese party in the arena seating area. Enjoy some delicious food and fantastic horses! Please join us in celebration of the world’s most wonderful horse: The Peruvian Horse!

ALTERNATIVE PERFORMANCE ATTIRE!
This year, we are opening both the Amateur and Open Performance divisions to “alternative attire”. This is NOT mandatory, rather a new option. There are many that prefer not to wear whites so this allows them to wear different colors (still within the NAPHA-approved spectrum), vests and ties. A few other shows in our region have implemented alternative performance attire and it has been embraced by exhibitors so we thought that we’d give it a try.

PERUVIAN REINING SERIES!
After much thought and consideration on how to maintain the traditions of the Peruvian Horse, we have developed the “Peruvian Reining Series”. These are four classes, levels one (bit and bozal), two and three, that allow a wide range to horse and rider ability. The difficulty of the required maneuvers at each level increases, with level three having the required movements of the enfrenadura.
Multiple shows through out the Southwest are offering the Peruvian Reining Series. There will be two end-of-year High Point Awards: one for Professionals and one for Amateurs. These will be given to the Professional and Amateur that have accumulated the highest average score from all Peruvian Reining Series at the shows they exhibit at. A minimum of 3 scores will be required. Click here to download a complete set of guidelines.

JUNIOR FUN CLASSES!
We have a fantastic group of kids riding in the shows these days. They come from all over California so we thought that planning something fun for them on Friday would be a great way to break the ice. We have added a few Junior fun classes for Friday lunch, to be officiated by the Egg Stomp Queen herself, Cheryl Calentine. Afterwards, kids can enjoy a pizza party hosted by HVM Ranch and Hacienda *Sol de Oro (J). These classes do not count toward Junior High Points and are FREE to enter… just go have some fun!

NEW AWARDS!
We have added two new awards to this year’s roster… High Point Amateur of Show and El Premio del Futuro de la Raza. High Point Amateur is awarded to the amateur that accumulates the highest number of points in the Amateur division. El Premio del Futuro de la Raza is awarded by the judge, at his discretion, to the young mare or stallion that he feels shows the greatest potential for the future of the breed. The winner will be selected from entries in bozal and halter classes.

ANIMAL COMMUNICATOR!
This year, we thought that it would be fun and informative to invite an animal communicator to the show. Candi Cane Cooper is an internationally acclaimed Animal Communicator and Certified Hypnotherapist. Her work has been forged from her commitment to mesh human and animal into one universal mind. When not talking to the animals, she spends time running her nonprofit animal rescue, Adoption 911. She will be available on the show grounds and her rates are $50 for 15 minutes or $75 for 30 minutes.

Well, there you have it! We hope that you come to the show as either an exhibitor or spectator. We’ve been advertising the show in Horseman’s News as well as online and a good turnout is expected. If you are unable to come, that doesn’t mean that you can’t sponsor a class or donate a silent auction item! We appreciate all of your input, help and support – we can’t do it without you!

See you July 23-25 in Santa Barbara!

Los Amigos Members Working Hard!

On April 16, our national organization, NAPHA, announced the results of the election for three new board members. Larry Redman, Danell Adams and Rich Ovenburg came out the top three contenders out of a field of nine candidates. Gene Pepe has been appointed to the open appointed spot and will serve as Treasurer. Needless to say, the whole process beginning with the petition to make this election even possible took many months to accomplish. However, the results are in and everyone is ready to go to work! All of the very qualified candidates are to be congratulated and thanked for their willingness to run for the board. It was a good election and clearly demonstrated that there is a great deal of enthusiasm for our organization despite some recent difficult times.

The new NAPHA Board has a great deal to accomplish, but they are anxious to get going and to put NAPHA on a progressive track. Many new committees will be established with a corp of volunteers whom also wish to step in and contribute their time and expertise to our breed. The legacy of the Peruvian Horse is so important to all who worked hard before us and to the future generations that will carry this elegant horse forward. For now, it is incumbent upon all of us to help work through some of the issues at hand and to present solutions that will serve our membership and our horses.

Los Amigos members are hard at work on the national level! Members Danell Adams, Larry Redman and Barbara Windom serve on the NAPHA Board of Directors. Also serving NAPH on the Regional Advisory  Council are Joline Bell Hahn (RAC Chairperson), Joy Redman, Charlotte Dicke Becerra, Jim Alexander, Juan Sandigo and Carolyn Mittrick. Wow! If you would like to serve on one of the new upcoming committees, please contact Joline and she’d be happy to get you on the nominations list.

The Peruvian Horse is incredibly unique in the equine world. With everyone working together, we can develop a solid foundation for NAPHA to continue to promote these horses in the manner they truly deserve!

2010 Equine Affaire Booth

The Los Amigos and Southern California Peruvian Horse Clubs recently sponsored an information booth at the 2010 Equine Affaire in Pomona. Members from both clubs volunteered their time to staff the booth over the four day event and field hundreds of questions from the public. The booth was full of informative material free to the public as well as an assortment of club banners, show ribbons, photos, peruvian tack and attire. The public also enjoyed a DVD displayed on a flatscreen television showing the Southern California Rose Parade team performing at Fiesta of the Spanish Horse, Equestfest and the Rose Parade.  On Friday afternoon, Jorge Valenzuela also led a team of eight riders into the  arena for a live demonstration of our horses.

The Equine Affaire is a wonderful opportunity to showcase and educate the public about our breed. Thanks to both clubs and all of the volunteers for dedicating their time and knowledge to making this yet another successful event.

Calling All Southern California Parade Riders!

Hello Peruvian Paso Enthusiasts!

As you all know, we had a very successful pursuit of an entry in the 2010 Rose Parade. As Marshal of this group, I have been asked to put another team together to pursue the 2011 Parade. I have agreed to do it again if I can get a team of 14 plus riders. We had 13 this year.

This is a commitment! We have a few parades to ride in before the application is due in May. Participation with the team is a must as these are both practice sessions and good orientation for the horses. We also participate in the Fiesta of the Spanish Horse with a demo to music in May as well as the Equestfest, which is tied to the Rose Parade and is the same week as the Rose Parade. Both demos are at LAEC in front of huge audiences and loud music.

Our outfits are red as are most decorations for the horses. As this is a rather expensive process, we will likely use the same decorations as in 2009 with some minor changes. Certainly the red ponchos, which were a favorite with everyone including the Tournament of Roses committee!

If you are interested in joining this team and can make the time commitment, please let me know ASAP as we have our first parade coming up in Laguna Beach in March. Please consider the expense as well. The club picks up our insurance costs, but riders DO incur expenses for travel, stalls (twice) and so on. With donations, a raffle and silent auction we managed to gather $6,000, which was awesome. Thank you to all that supported our efforts. The second parade is at the San Juan Fiesta on March 20th.

This is a fun process! We truly had a fun year doing the parades, having pizza practice parties and performing with our horses. If you are interested in participating in the once-in-a-lifetime event, please send me an email to that affect. I must tell you that the tournament committee rejects 50% of their applications, so there are no guarantees that we will get in. However, I also believe that we were very well received this last year and that should certainly help. Committee members attend the Fiesta of the Spanish Horse and assess teams there as well.

Obviously, the main requirement for this commitment is your time of course, and your horse! I would certainly prefer that your horse has already demonstrated parade soundness. If you THINK your horse is, then the first couple of local parades will help us to better assess true readiness. I would be glad to discuss this with your personally. Parades are a challenge for the horses; it’s nothing like being in a show arena. Our first two parades are Laguna Beach which is a small, short parade but full of the usual parade obstacles and the San Juan parade, which is much bigger and offers more challenges with bigger crowds, lots of announcers and big noise.

Thanks much and look forward to hearing from you!
